Amarillo GirL Choir

The Amarillo Girl Choir was added to Amarillo Youth Choirs in 2001 and consistently maintains more than 100 members! The Girls are split into two choirs: Amarillo Preparatory Choir and Amarillo Concert Choir. When girls audition (starting as early as 2nd grade), they are typically placed into the Amarillo Girl Preparatory Choir where they can start to learn how to read music, how to understand solfege, what their voice type is, and how the individual becomes something more when joined with a choir of others. The progression from Preparatory Choir to Concert Choir depends on the musicality and maturity of the member and is up to the discretion of the directors.

Once promoted to Concert Choir, the music literature becomes more challenging, the expectations for attention are higher, and the opportunities for exciting performance opportunities become more plentiful. All of the choirs tour locally to share their music, but the Concert Choirs travel on week-long tours domestically and internationally. Girls typically stay in Concert Choir until they’re in High School - some stay even longer as interns and volunteering alumni!

Amarillo Boy Choir

The Amarillo Boy Choir had its first season in 1989! The Boy Choir is unique in the field of youth choirs, because it continues to maintain the division of sexes in their separate choirs. Many ask why this is - and the answer is that the voice qualities of the respective genders are quite different when listening to boys verses girls. We feel that that uniqueness is special and want to maintain opportunities for it to stand alone.

The Boy Choirs, like the Girl Choirs, have two levels of membership: Preparatory and Concert. Membership in the Preparatory Choir is open to anyone in the 2nd grade or higher. Concert Choir membership is based on the musicality and maturity of the individual member, as quite a bit more is expected of the Concert Choir member.

The amount of time a boy stays in the Amarillo Boy Choir is determined by his individual circumstances and biology. As a boy’s body grows so do the vocal chords and as such the pitch that they are able to create lowers and matures. This process continues in the growing male body for many years! The Amarillo Boy Choir works with individual students to incorporate their voice in the musical texture.
